Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant blasts rocking Tehran, following claims from Israel that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet stated, without initially offer further details.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Prior Developments
This event takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the region. Key events preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
