Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
